Jay Leno: The Hardest-Working Square in Show Business

Interesting Jay Leno exit interview. He's a pretty humble, hard-working guy, if a little self-effacing. Whenever I read about successful comics I'm always astonished at how hard they worked in pursuing their passion. Very inspiring.

What do you remember most about your first days in L.A., when you came out here to do stand-up?

I got arrested for vagrancy on Hollywood Boulevard. The same spot, two nights in a row. I had no place to sleep, so I would walk all night. When they gave me my star on Hollywood Boulevard, I told them to put it on the spot where I got arrested.

50 Years of Stupid Grammar Advice

50 Years of Stupid Grammar Advice - ChronicleReview.com.

I've only recently heard of Strunk and White but a lot of their lessons sound very familiar. Of course, I rarely paid attention to grammar, and writing in general, when I was in school. Writing a paper was like getting a root canal without anesthesia. Not because it was just a lot of work, I just had such a hard time holding focus on an idea through pages of writing.

Using a computer to compose my writing has made things much easier. Each sentence feels less cemented in its position (in my head, at least). They feel more like building blocks that I can easily rearrange in whatever order needed to build my prose.

After pages and pages of handwriting I would lose my direction and end up scrapping the whole thing. Every wrong turn only compounded the problems with the only solution being starting over from the beginning.

Outlines were just posturing as far as I was concerned. Thinking about now, I would have had a much easier time with all of this if I'd taken a class that was solely dedicated to building outlines.

Camera Obscura - The Morning News

Camera Obscura - The Morning News.

Some students did this to the art building gallery once while I was in grad school. The sharpness and detail was beyond what the above linked images show. If I remember correctly, they used a copper plate for the hole so they could get it razor sharp. I think I'm going to give this try at work.
